O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King! Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother; For Thou art blessed unto ages of ages.

Amen

A Hobbitish Party for Max

Max accomplished a big goal in his reading last year.  He not only read and completed The Hobbit; he LOVED it.  A rare moment in our history of reading and something that needed to be celebrated with a bang.  His 12th birthday, though, months away, presented a perfect time to to have a Hobbit themed party. Plus, it was far enough away that it gave me time plan.

With the help of Lucy, the wide world of the blogs, and imagination we through a most splendid Hobbiton party; with an adventure, ginger ale, some root beer and treasure!

{The Invitation Contract}
"Sorry! I don't want any adventures, thank you.  Not today. Good Morning! But please come to tea-any time you like! Why not tomorrow? Good bye!"

“All the same, I should like it all plain and clear," said he obstinately, putting on his business manner (usually reserved for people who tried to borrow money off him), and doing his best to appear wise and prudent and professional and live up to Gandalf's recommendation. "Also I should like to know about risks, out-of-pocket expenses, time required and remuneration, and so forth"--by which he meant: "What am I going to get out of it ? and am I going to come back alive?”

{The Decor}

(credit for the banner goes to Jessica and Charlotte click on to either site to get the download, then use it how you like)

A map of The Shire drawn on a simple plastic table cover.
A whole $0.99 spent on a cool cover.

"Do we really have to go through [Mirkwood]?" groaned the hobbit. "Yes, you do!" said the wizard, "if you want to get to the other side. You must either go through or give up your quest. There are no safe paths in this part of the world."

Two trees made of craft butcher paper, one in the dining room and the other in the entry way, served as our version of Mirkwood

 {The Feast}
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold [as the hobbits do], it would be a merrier world."
The huge ham, some 20 baked potatoes, mini minced meat pies and green salad weren't around long enough to take a picture.  But, they added to the Hobbit style feast and was enjoyed by everyone; especially the boys LOL!

There was a lot of baking and cooking to get the meals ready for our little party.  The happy faces and satisfied tummies from from the kids and the adults made it worth it.
Most especially the face of Max, our honored burglar, who kept thanking us for such a "cool party!"

{The Cake}
"And more cakes-and ale-and coffee if you don't mind,"
called the other dwarves

The web is full of examples and how-to-make your very own Hobbit Hole cake.  Here are just a few for your own quick reference
{The Adventure}
"We are plain quiet folk, and I have no use for adventures.
Nasty, disturbing, and uncomfortable things."

The boys were asked to bring their own ponies bikes to the party.  Earlier in the day The Lineman and Lucy took a treasure box filled with jewels and gold (lots of lemon heads, jaw breakers, sour balls, and gold nugget gum drops) to the hills.  The treasure was hidden in Smaug's den, a crevice in the hills; the boys were then sent off on an adventure to retrieve the gold.

Of course, we sent them off with supplies since it was a part of the agreement to joining the party
 :-)

At the end Smaug was slayed, via a cool looking dragon pinata, everyone scoring a nice batch of  sweets treasure to enjoy.
"Never laugh at live dragons."

Happy 12th Birthday Max!
You deserved the time spent on this day!!
Totally!

"I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself."

Sweet 16!!

16 years ago today at exactly 5:35 am
A baby girl was born
and we,
The Lineman and I,
became parents!
It's amazing to see that a remarkable young lady grow and form before our very eyes.  Lucy is kind, talented, mature, and a much better 16 year old than I was {blush}.

Happy Birthday mija,
You are a joy to our hearts and a gift to our family.

Heavenly Father,
We praise You for all Your gifts to us.
In a special way,
We thank You for (Lucy).
Bless her always in Your love.
Bless us too, Holy Father,
And this food with which we celebrate.
Help us all to praise You and give You glory
Through Jesus Christ our lord.

Amen.

5!

Yes, you little Cecilia are now 5!

October 29, 2006
we were gifted a teeny-tiny dark eyed beauty.
For months you had dreaded your 5th birthday.  How can a little girl not want to turn 5?  You kept saying you didn't want to grow up.  You stated more than once how you wished you could stay my "little girl forever".  That you couldn't "bare to see me get old".  Some of what you said troubled me.  Over time though, and as we neared your birthday, you seemed to have gotten over your 'hurdle'.
There is still a mention or two about living with your Papi and I until we are grey and grandparents.  But just the other day you asked me,
"how is it that bills get paid".
And you made a realization that,
"adults can have dessert, even when they don't finish their dinner".

So, I suppose you've come to terms with one day becoming an adult.
Until then,
you may stay our little girl for as long as you wish!
With candy apples, lollipops, chocolate covered pretzels and cake!
That will be just alright with me!

Turning 10

A belated birthday tribute

With all the running around to and fro choir practices, viola/guitar/piano lessons and such; I haven't had the time to post about our birthday celebrations.

Nor did I get to post any photo tributes to them either.
So in a quick flash, here it is b-day #1.

Max is 10
10!
A double digit birthday!

As a treat I took him out to get some breakfast.  It was supposed to be a mother and son morning
but
a little someone didn't want to be left behind
He looked 'so thrilled'.

But really, he had no reason to be down.  His celebrating lasted a whole week.
Caught in the act!
Trying to sneak into the candy...

Simple cake
For a grateful kid

It was a day of quiet fun
followed by a weekend of
great fun!
laser tag-
pizza-
lots of boys-
some family in the mix-
laughs and ice cream

We love you, mijo!!
Love that you still want and need our tight hugs.
Love that you aren't embarrassed when your sisters call you by their special names for you.
Love that you are you and feel no need to rush.
Love that you are engrossed with rocks, insects and clouds.

We just love YOU!

A Cupcake for a Birthday

I thought I'd post the pictures of Rose's birthday from...oh a month ago!  I just never got around to posting them.

Our Rose is a connoisseur of cupcakes.  She enjoys making them, decorating them and of course eating them.  So when I asked her what theme she wanted for her birthday she made a very obvious choice.

Cupcake Wars

The idea was pretty simple.  Each older member of the family was to make their own set of cupcakes.  The guest at the party were then to taste/judge each cupcake and Rose would be the announcer to which baker made the best tasting cupcake.

Dark chocolate cupcake with a peanut butter frosting
by Lucy
Vanilla & mango cupcake with a mango glaze
by Max
Simply white cake with a cream cheese frosting

The guest arrived for an early dinner and then we were off for a quick t-ball game with Rose

If memory serves me, I think they won.

We all had such a great surprise with the unexpected visit from my sister and sister-in-law.  They drove 3 hours to celebrate Rose's birthday.   It was a huge, happy, shock to see them walk through the doors.
Just awesome!!!

Our nephew, little D, with Princess

We were filled with sweets, grub and drinks by the end of the night...Papi ended up bringing out his disco lights from back in the day...yikes!

Oh and the winner of the cupcake war....
Max!
(I won't even write what he used for the cupcake...but it was in a square shape)

Seven years ago today...

We received a beautiful Rose
Papi and I were together at the ultrasound appointment

I cried when the technician announced that you would be a girl.

I don't know why I teared up, but I instantly felt your sweetness

I knew my life would be enriched because of you.
Since then you haven't disappointed...

Your hugs are always tight and heartfelt

Your smirks crack us up

As you've grown, so has your goofiness

Where did you get your sense of humor Rose?

You started life quietly yet
inquisitively,
and then..

WOW!

Our Rose,
such life
such a spirit!
The thinker, the questioner;
all those questions you ask have meaning and a purpose.
You goofiness is a gift
as is your desire to please.
Oh how my heart stops when you express your sadness
and leaps for joy when you are pleased.

Rose, you are a gift to your siblings

and a treasure to us all

Happy 7th Birthday!!

No Longer the Baby...

(her birthday was this past Friday)
But you will always be OUR baby
Happy Birthday Princess

The tiniest of the bunch
immediately after birth
you looked at everyone around you as if you knew something quite special about them
Such looks you gave
eyes wide open
ready to see the whole world
the phrase that one shouldn't judge a book by it's cover applies to you my dear
 you are small in size
but you are quite the character
full of joy
full of laughter

You were born with an agenda

you seem to know it still
your hugs have weight and meaning

your smirks a bit of mischief
But we ALL melt with your gaze

Our little girl,
so ready to learn,
exploring every opportunity,
fearless yet cautious,
a natural little momma,
that doesn't mess around;
sensitive to discipline,
so dainty,
so determined,
such a joy to watch grow!

We love you
and can't wait what other adventure you have ready for us still!!
