O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King! Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother; For Thou art blessed unto ages of ages.

Amen

On the feast of St. John Bosco

"When... stubbornness takes hold of one’s mind, how can sanctity ever flourish? Where humble obedience reigns, grace will triumph."- Don Bosco

St. John Bosco is one of those saints that attracts the attention of young boys and girls.  What I find most appealing about him is how his life is like that of many young people today.  Actually, we can be talking about the very same issues St. John Bosco saw and wrote about within the faces of our own youth today.

His approach was cleverly constructed by God...being able to touch and relate to a young boy for instance takes a gift.  Obviously St. John Bosco was charismatic, playful, intelligent but he used those gifts, bestowed by God to reach a section of our population so easily dismissed.  He believed that showing love to the boys in his care would be enough to touch their souls.  That giving a combination of knowledge, play, and guidance could, by the grace of God, turn a lost youth around.  He taught by religion, reason and kindness!

I spent quite a few years with the youth just like Father John's.  They were/are the abandoned and forgotten juveniles of the state system, either under the direct care of the foster care program or the probation system.  My focus was working with the girls more so than the boys.  These girls always tried to be so strong during the day, very tough to deal with.  But, at night all those walls came crumbling down.

They would often cry themselves to sleep, that is when they slept.  But what I found during these nightly episodes was that they craved protection and guidance.  They wanted discipline and structure.  They yearned for knowledge, I mean they fought against it at first, but once the wall came down a bit they were wide eyed and enthusiastic for truth.  I wish I would have known more about St. John Bosco then, asking for his intercessions for these children.  Because they were children.  Perhaps a bit damaged, but they were created by God just as I was and my children.

And St. John Bosco knew that too.

I'm no longer in that particular field, I do miss it, but I was given another job. To raise my own children; giving them the same education, direction, and love that St. John Bosco is remembered for.  I think of the kids I met and the many I got to know so well.  I pray for them.  Today, I'll be asking for St. John Bosco's intersessions for them too.

(Father John Bosco hearing the confessions of his boys)

I hope you all have (are having) a wonderful Monday!

Sites worth a click:

"it is interesting to observe how St. John Bosco was always aware of the problems of his times. He was not a saint living in the clouds, as sentimental hagiographies depict many saints. St. John Bosco knew the problems of his time and combated the enemies of the Church as they actually were."

A prayer for my girls...where ever they may be now and for all the youth we know

O glorious Saint John Bosco,
who in order to lead young people to the feet of the divine Master
and to mould them in the light of faith
and Christian morality didst heroically sacrifice thyself
to the very end of thy life
and didst set up a proper religious Institute destined to endure
and to bring to the farthest boundaries of the earth thy glorious work,
obtain also for us from Our Lord a holy love for young people
who are exposed to so many seductions
in order that we may generously spend ourselves in supporting them
against the snares of the devil,
in keeping them safe from the dangers of the world,
and in guiding them,
pure and holy,
in the path that leads to God.

Amen.

Wordless Wednesdays

almost wordless
I just wanted to remember this
now that we are in the midst of a warm trend
now that as I get closer to a goal...
things seems to get harder
the attacks are on
and I just want to be reminded of the
child
the one who puts up her feet
and lets go

There is a giveaway

....happening right now.

Go check it out, Small Things, Ginny, has graciously offered to giveaway one of a cute Dolly Necklace.  I'd post a picture but they belong to Ginny....so go on over there and enter the giveaway.

The dolls are so so cute.  I know my two little ones would love one.

Ginny was extra nice to also offer a tutorial for the pouches the dolls sleep in.  She has given very detail and easy instructions for making one or more of them for ourselves.  It looks like a fun project for those sewing/crafty mommas; and any one else handy with a sewing machine.  In fact, it looks like an easy enough project for the sewing novices too...that would be me by-the-way :)

Good luck!

Ringing in the New Year...

...with snow and family

We had the pleasure of spending New Year's Eve with one of my brothers and his family.  This is the first time in years that we've been able to manage celebrating together.

My brother, Leo, is a typical younger brother (he's the one in the red jacket...just look at his smirk...still my little brother).  As kids he would tease his big sisters, mess with our dolls, had our mother wrapped around his little finger....the kid could do NO wrong in her eyes.
It's actually still kind of like that, LOL :)

But look at him now?
A family man

He's a pretty great brother.  One of the kindest men I know; truly has a giving heart.  Not perfect mind you, I still have to act like his big sis here, but he is pretty close to the best kind of brother anyone could want.

The weather up in the mountains was perfect.  Just enough warmth to make it comfortable and plenty of snow for winter fun!

We went sledding

gathered icicles
that later had to be confiscated when they were turned into swords

tossing of snow

some were not as happy
about that snow in her jacket

Hubbie thought Max would make a better snow angel
if he tossed him into a pile of undisturbed snow

Max didn't think so...

We ate, drank, played games and danced a bit too
by the time midnight came around everyone but Rose and Princess were awake
I mean 'really' awake

The next day was nice and mellow

but nothing stops this family from
snowboarding

This is by far some of the best moments of the vacation

It was a great way to celebrate a brand new start
and we were blessed to have spent it with family

I am truly grateful for the memories made here

Every good gift comes from the Father of light.
May He grant you His grace and every blessing,

May He grant you unwavering faith,
constant hope, and love that endures to the end.

May He order your days and work in His peace,
hear your every prayer,
and lead you to everlasting life and joy.

R. Amen!

May almighty God bless you,
the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.

How goes it?

I am overhauling lesson plans, beginning to look into Lucy's 9th grade year (what!), and trying to keep with the rhythm of our home that seems to have fallen from Heaven.

It's been a really good school week.

It's been a great prayer week.

And all I did was; do less.

Could it be that simple?

Yep, I'm full proof of it.  With the exception of work that is being done on some property and a very sick relative in the hospital; we have been on a nice simpler roll.

Now I need to figure out how to keep this nice turn of events with 3 kids in weekly orchestra and all kids starting baseball and softball two weeks from now.....

Oh dear!

Looking for a husband...already?

(Princess and I having an afternoon to ourselves)

Princess:  Momma, am I going to be married when I'm all grown up and be an adult?

Me:  Well, maybe...we'll have to wait and see when you grow up.

(Thinks for a bit)
Princess:  Yes, I'm going to be married...but who am I going to marry?  Can I marry Papi?

Me:  No mija, Papi married me a very long time ago.  He's my husband and can't be yours...he is your Papi.

Princess:  Well then who am I going to marry?

(thinks for a bit then says....)

Princess:  I know!  I will marry that boy from church...he's cute and I already see him at church!  I already know him!

(So now I have to add that boy from church to my prayers...a certain 4 year old has him marked for a spouse =) and I have no clue who she is refering too)

HOME

This is where I am.  After a few years of saying it, I think I've arrived.

I'm HOME.

I mean this figuratively and physically too.  We've been away a lot over the last month.  There are several things I've missed for the lack of just being around.  A cookie exchange link up came and went...I love cookie exchanges and I missed it.

But that's okay.

I was away spending time with family and getting cozy next to fires.

What I really mean by being HOME is that I feel more focused in my role as wife and mother.  It isn't always a pretty site.  No, but the effort to be a peace in my HOME is a constant now.

I wish I could say that my prayer life is perfect, that the kids lesson plans are updated, that each child is receiving exactly what they need at the moment they need it.  I wish I could say that my house is as clean as I'd like it to be or that the clutter I tried to get rid of last year has stayed gone.

Nope.  I can't say any of those things.

But, I can say that I look at each day with new eyes.  I try to meet the needs of both husband and children on an hourly basis.  I carve out prayer time, not always daily but I'm getting there.  I am slowly getting to that clutter.

Yes!  I am deconstructing my HOME.  Every inch of it.  It was the reason why we took all of Advent off from regular school work.  My family needed time to just be still.  To cook and read together.  Watch silly movies, walk in the rain, visit lots of family....to breath.

Now I'm getting to the physical needs of my HOME.  More on that later...

During all this there is the daily-hourly talks with Jesus.  I am more grateful to God for His abundance love for me and what He has put forth in my life.  I see Him in my children.  I see Him in the love between my husband and I.  I can see His hand on even the current struggles...here prayers are needed.

HOME is my word for 2011.

HOME is my focus.
